Not been shooting….
So I cant remember the last time that I actually decided to go shoot something interesting for me, I have been shooting things that I have to but not that I want to – huge difference. So maybe I can get back to basics and go looking for some creative juices to flow…
Today’s Photo
As this storm rolled through I quickly grabbed my camera and took off to try to capture something out of it. I ended up 2 minutes from house (that two minutes was a flat run) and setup to find this dramatic moving of the clouds. I was hoping the storm would slow down and give me more time to setup and shoot but it did not. I often at times like to study the scene and what is going on and then setup at various angles and positions taking a wide variety of shots. This was a holy smokes!!! Just shoot! Here is what was captured….

Now that can be interpreted in many ways – some people might relate this to their job, some might relate it to their exercise habits, some might relate it to eating habits, drinking habits, relationships, the car they drive, the time they get up in the morning, the time they spend with loved ones the list goes on and on and on. I challenge you to figure out what if any you are saying this with.

So today, you get two photos taken after Christmas when we were getting ready to take down the Christmas tree. I was itching to shoot something since I have not shot in a long while, so I grabbed my Macro lens and shot these two. I really enjoyed them, I was using one as a wallpaper for a while but had to move on to something else since it is not Christmas any longer. I love Christmas – is it here yet again?? Ok, well not really…but thought that it was a clever title :)
My youngest son and I went out Christmas light looking – this old bridged seemed like a great thing to shoot until the rush of others came across it. But while that was happening I got a vision in my head (not that of sugar plums silly) and this photo is the result of that. This is a way over done extreme edit that I dont normally go except certain situations and this is one of them. Feel free to leave a comment. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Where is the snow and junk???
So it is Christmas, but here in Ohio someone has forgotten to tell mother nature that we would like to have some snow and stuff…I really love this time of year and with it I would really like to have some cold and snow. I love hot fires in the buck stove, looking outside and seeing snow and frost – all things that go with Christmas time. I am going to do something a little different today and post a couple shots in here you dont mind do you?

There is this great historic place called Clifton Mill that most people from this area know about. Me and my youngest son went there last night and had a great time. We got there early and it was rainy so we waited for it to stop and then went in. Though we should have checked the website first – the lights dont come on until 6pm my idea was to get there early and take dramatic shots of the clouds etc – well that was completely foiled. I am going to have to talk with them really nicely and see if I am able to get them to turn them on early just for me :-D. So anyways the two shots – one of the “program” they hand out and one of the mill and lights. I love going to this place and will back again to shoot more of it. While shooting with my buddy Jeremi we came across this great scene. So as I shot this he decided to shoot this happy couple on their two week anniversary…now one part of me says – wait he was shooting something that can make him money and I shot only this…but then I look at it and think – I hope someone buys this to hand on their wall :)
I think that this one looks so much better than than the Nations tree in Washington which I got to see while traveling as well. Thoughts?

Today’s Photo – Thankful
We are in the season of one of the most iconic celebrations in the world – Christmas. And as I reflect back on Christmas it makes me think of the most iconic event to many folks – Easter. I remember going to the cemetery where many of my family is resting – kind of morbid and sad I know – but it is a part of life that no one can escape.
So enough of that – this photo is a reflection of Thanksgiving to me – I am thankful for it – are you? I remember sitting there framing this shot and I noticed something very unique – what do you see? Is it the same thing that I see? Yikes – Sorry about that!
Well, I kind of lost track of posting daily photos…the last few weeks have been crazy to say the least. However I am back now and hope to get a few in the queue and ready to post. Holidays trip up everyone’s time – I will try to get back on posting dailyish <----- yes that is a made up word by Moi :)
Today’s Photo – Life is Good
So me and my buddy Jeremi decided to go out and shoot at night the other night and shoot…well I decided to go and nudged him in to coming with me. We went to a near by outdoor shopping center where they had decorated for Christmas (my tied for first favorite time to shoot) which I will post some of later. While we were walking around and shooting there was a guy walking around that asked us a number of questions and asked if it was okay to shoot us – I dont recall his name though I do have it in my iPhone (note to self Chris – Email dude)
Anyways I am way off on a tangent here, so I was setting up to shoot a shot had my tripod and camera mounted in the middle of the street shooting and on the last shot a car came down the road (the nerve of them!!!) and I had to pull the tripod mid shoot of a long exposure that made it look crazy. Anyways I got back to the sidewalk and setup for this shot that I thought was going to be meh – you be the judge. I originally thought that it would look great in full color as I usually like popping colors. But I just felt like this one should be BW and so I did the unthinkable and converted it. I might post the color version as well at some point. Anyways – here is the shot, hope you enjoy.

Behind scenes coming soon!
Well, if you remember a few post back I was toying with the idea of doing behind the scenes videos of the shoots. I did a really quick attempt at this just to see how it went and if I would enjoy doing. It was quite fun! Next time I will get a bit more in to the details of the technical aspect of what I am shooting etc. However this was just some fun (again at least I think it was fun) Chris banter – and there is even a special guest start that joins me – one of my sons! Who is not looking forward to this??
Travel Schedule
Well, in other exciting news I am really looking forward to getting to do some photo travel here real soon! Just added to the list is New Orleans – that might be an achievable mark off the list as it wont be as expensive as say Hawaii. In case you missed it I have a “ Future Locations List Here that I keep adding to – just added to it this week (thanks Cindy!!) and it will keep getting added to as well as getting marked off when I visited a place. I will most likely visit all these places multiple times should I get the opportunity.
Today’s Photo – Fall Pond
So Fall is one of my absolute favorite times of the year to shoot – so you would think that I would be busy shooting like mad during this time right??? Wrong, this year I barely got out to shoot during fall. I did get out one night to shoot at a park that my grandmother used to take me to. As I walked around take photos of this and that I must have gotten asked 50 times if I had seen lost dog. Unfortunately I did not and never did see it that night – I hope that he made it home ok.
So this photo as I walked around I just saw very painterly. It looked to me as if I would see this hanging on the wall at my grandmothers house a painting, so that is the look that I went for – hope you enjoy it as much as I did creating it :)

so I completely did not follow through on my challenge to myself to use only one lens for the next 10 shots, or did I? I did not say when I would use that lens only that the next 10 that intend to post would be with a certain lens, and so since I have already shot the below photo I have not yet broke that challenge – that sounded complicated, on to the good stuff :)
Which camera is better
One of the first thing that people ask when they see my photo’s is – WOW – you must have a nice camera or what kind of camera do you use?? I have touched on the this subject in the past I believe – however I cant seem to find the post. So one of the following questions is “Which is better, Nikon or Canon?” This is simple: Both are great pieces of equipment. At the high end spectrum each offer a great body with similar features. This comes down to preference as well as previously owned equipment. If you have a lot of glass built up then you will mostly choose that brand, if you are just getting started that is a bit more in depth question to ponder. But all in all they both make really great cameras. Both companies also offer enticing videos of a product to help persuade the potential buyers. Below are two of my favorite videos from Nikon and one from a third party for Canon. I will admit that the Nikon D800 video really hit me in the soft spot and I think that it was really really well done. I almost chose the Nikon D800 over the Canon 5D III – but this video had nothing to do with that decision ;-)

Not much to say today other than…
I cant wait to get home and process from photos! I have a lot that are just sitting there waiting on me to do something with them. I often get asked about photo’s that I have taken and where they are? I must admit that I have a weird workflow when it comes to taking the photos and then processing them. I could probably stand to dial this process in a bit and make it a little more streamlined and structured especially since I tend to be OCD about everything. This is a small part of my life that is a bit disorganized. My process is simple though – go take photos, come home, dump photos to folder, briefly look, if anything catches my eye start processing it but often times they lay there dormant for a while and I come back to them and pluck a few out to process. So you might see an image today that I took months ago sometimes years ago.

This little guy came and landed on my oldest son while we were at lunch in a butterfly house. There were a ton of monarchs roaming about and this guy just landed like he was saying “look at me, I am more interesting, turn your camera this way and shoot me!”

Having said that – who is looking forward to “The Avengers” coming to BluRay??? I cant wait! I believe that it is coming to stores and digital media on September 25th – are you going to preorder? You bet I am!! I love that movie and think that EVERYONE should watch it as well as Thor – yes I am a big geek and love the superhero movies – guess which one is my favorite?

What fun this has been!
You know they say that getting out of your comfort zone is usually uncomfortable…well not during this exercise! I have been having the most fun while shooting my non typical style shots. I might just keep doing it for a while! I might even branch out to other areas!

So here is another shot that I took this week – yes, I know I am breaking my rule – post photos that have been sitting a while. However I am having a lot of fun shooting and processing these things so why not?? Here we have the most beautiful butterfly known in my opinion: The Monarch. We have a butterfly house and I went at lunch to shoot it and came back with a couple that I liked – look for them every now and again :)

Well, I actually stayed true to what I said – I said I would shoot non- HDR for the next ten maybe…so here is the first of the series – I will not post them all in order though – what fun would that be?? BTW the one before of the tree was not HDR either ;)
